They say that everything old is new again, at some stage.
A couple of weeks ago I wrote about revisiting inspirations that were actually helping me to focus. Now it’s the turn of the new. A new incarnation of an old favourite tv show. At first, I didn’t think I’d like this new incarnation; however, I think I might be. Bingeing seven episodes in a row might be considered liking it.
What I’m seeing is refining my thoughts about the technology being used at the time of the show. It’s before the setting of my series and I have a serious lack of similar advancements.
Travel times for one. I’ve realised that I take way too long for my characters to get from A to B whilst in space. I can easily make it quicker without losing story. Transport is another. Transport as is instant site-to-site, or physical as in ships and shuttles. My communications seem to be okay and I’m fine with the advancements I’ve made with my story. These are namely due to the fact that they are alien and being introduced into my human characters.
Even some of my alien technologies, other than comms listed above, have come under scrutiny and they have been thrown back into the pot for further development. I’m pleased to say that they haven’t needed much and are probably done. All I need to do now is integrate them into the story itself.
When I think I’ve done what I think I need to do, I suddenly come across an idea that totally reshapes my stories. I really have to stop otherwise I won’t get anything else published.
Refinements are a good thing. For me, my hope is that it makes my story stronger and slightly more believable, despite being set in the future. Whilst I still need readers to suspend their disbelief, it still needs to be relatively believable.
Happy renewing and refining.
