Why Do We Write?

I saw a post online tonight that asked the question; ‘Why do we write?’.

The responses were as varied as the people who responded. Mine was simple, could be considered as odd, but I said we write because we write.

Of course it is much more than that. Writers write mostly due to the fact that they are usually creative people and use it as an outlet. That was certainly the case for me in the beginning. I always saw my writing as a hobby. A way to allow the creative side of me to express itself. Even before I discovered NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month in November) I would find myself writing for hours on end. Back then I never looked at the word count. I mean I did, but it was never anything that was a priority to know.

I enjoy writing. I like to be creative. I love creating worlds and geography and flags and history and names and profiles and objects. I’m a visual writer. I like to take an item or two from a story and bring them to life. Quite often, that item, or those items, become components that will appear on the cover. I am now published and want to release more books.

Being creative is releasing. Creating something physical is releasing. It can also be very frustrating. I can be q perfectionist sometimes and if I am creating something that isn’t working, then I t will either scrap it to start again or leave it to one side whilst my mind works on it in the background. I am forever looking for bits and pieces at work, or in craft stores, or bargain stores. Anywhere I happen to be I will look to see what’s there. To see what I can make. To see how I can fit it into one of the stories.

I love to write. People have told me that they enjoy my writing. The book I’m about to release very shortly is one of those books. I gave a teaser to some people I work with. They wanted the rest. They wanted it right away, but they have had wait for it, but I think they will be happy with the result. Although the book was finished, I still needed to finalise the editing, which I did this year (2018).

We write for the sheer pleasure it brings us, the writer.
